SECOND GRADE  
Religion 
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • identify the Ten Commandments and use them to make good moral choices
  • recognize and appreciate God's forgiveness
  • understand that the Holy Spirit is our helper, guide, and teacher
  • understand that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus
  • understand that grace is God's Life within us and is bestowed through the sacraments
  • understand the importance of Jesus's two Great Commandments and apply them to their lives
  • use the teachings of the Gospels and the Homily to follow Jesus
  • identify and promote actions of Peace and Justice
  • identify two major parts of the Bible (Old Testament, New Testament)
  • understand how Gospel stories teach about Jesus's goodness, love, and forgiveness
  • use Jesus's life story to model Christian behavior
  • recognize that the sacraments are a special sign of God's love
  • identify signs and explain the effects of the sacraments
  • have been prepared and given the opportunity to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist
  • identify parts of the Mass and actively participate through prayers, responses, and songs
 
Language Arts
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
In Reading: 
  • apply phonics skills and syllabication skills to decode words
  • develop fluency skills to enhance comprehension, independence and enjoyment of reading materials
  • identify basic elements of a story (i.e. plot, setting, characters)
  • identify basic elements of a book (title, author, illustrator, etc.)
  • develop skills to read for a variety of purposes (predict, find information, answer questions, etc.)
  • enhance reading experience with exposure to a variety of genres
In Writing: 
  • develop pre-writing skills for purposes of organizing ideas
  • expand upon an idea in writing with well-developed, sequential sentences
  • apply editing and revising skills to own writing
  • reread own writing as critique
In Spelling: 
  • apply grade-appropriate spelling patterns
  • apply rules for adding endings to words (CVCe, CVC, f endings, sh, x, ch endings, changing y to i before endings)
  • apply plural rules (adding s, es, ies; irregular plurals)
  • apply correct spelling of high-frequency words in writing
  • memorize and apply correct spelling to Priority Words
  • identify base words, prefixes, and suffixes in words
In Grammar: 
  • apply capitalization at the beginning of sentences
  • apply capitalization to Proper Nouns and the word "I"
  • use appropriate punctuation at the ends of sentences
  • use subject and predicate to create complete sentences
  • identify and write four types of sentences (statements, questions, exclamations, commands)
  • identify and use nouns, verbs, and adjectives to enhance writing
In Vocabulary 
  • use the dictionary to identify word meaning, parts of speech, pronunciation key and syllabication of words
  • identify and use synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms appropriately
  • have developed a broader range of reading vocabulary
  • apply enhanced oral vocabulary
In Penmanship 
  • apply appropriate letter formation in all printed writing
  • begin writing cursive lower case and capital letters
 
Mathematics
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • know addition facts, addends to 10, and related subtraction facts
  • demonstrate the ability to add and subtract 1-, 2-, and 3-digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • write equations with appropriate symbols
  • identify and represent common fractions as parts of wholes and parts of groups
  • use appropriate tools to measure length, weight, and area
  • gather, organize, classify, represent, and interpret data using tallies, charts, tables, bar graphs, picture graphs, and Venn Diagrams
  • describe attributes of two- and three-dimensional shapes
  • recognize congruence and symmetry in shapes
  • apply value of US coins and bills when counting money
  • use appropriate operations and strategies when solving problems
  • identify, reproduce, describe, extend, and create simple shape, size, number, color, and letter repeating patterns
  • use analog and digital clocks to tell and measure time to five-minute intervals 
Science
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
 
  • apply steps of Scientific Method for scientific inquiry
  • identify plant parts and their functions
  • classify animals by their physical characteristics
  • learn that all animals develop through predictable life cycles
  • understand that people have body systems that enable them to live and grow
  • define habitat as a place where plants and animals live and meet their needs
  • learn that habitats can be changed by weather conditions, pollution, and people
  • define fossils as preserved remains of plants and animals from long ago
  • understand how fossils can be used to give us information about the past
  • investigate variables that effect weather and climate
  • identify how the body works and how to maintain healthy habits
  • investigate variables that effect weather and climate
  • understand causes of night/day, seasons, and cycles of the moon
  • recognize the observable properties of matter
  • identify the three states of matter
  • understand that matter can change from one form to another
  • participate in activities that explore the physical science topics of force, motion, gravity, magnets, sound, pressure, and electricity
Social Studies
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • compare assets of using maps and the globe
  • use local, state, USA, and world maps to locate specific places
  • identify and use cardinal and secondary directionals in maps
  • name and locate seven major continents and four major oceans
  • have broadened understanding and appreciation of various cultures
  • develop understanding of personal responsibility in our world
  • identify important historical and geographical facts about the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 
 
Computer Technology
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • identify the Internet as a source of information
  • identify uses of technology in the community
  • recognize an individual’s rights of ownership to computer-generated work
  • use correct finger placement for keyboard home row keys
  • use word processing to enter, save, print, and retrieve text
  • identify and use electronic drawing tools to combine graphics and text
  • edit a word processing document and make corrections
  • enhance core curriculum activity through technology skills and applications
Music
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • understand the duration of basic notations
  • demonstrate rhythm using percussion instruments and body movements
  • sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs alone or with a group
  • listen to the music of composers from different periods demonstrating the knowledge that music has changed throughout history
Art
Progressively from Kindergarten through Grade 2 students will:
  • use a variety of materials and media (e.g. crayons, chalk, paint, clay) and various kinds of papers, textures, and yarns and understand how to use them to produce different visual effects
  • create artwork in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media
  • learn to take care of materials and tools and use them safely
  • learn the elements and principles of design and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following skills:
    • for color: explore and experiment with the use of color in dry and wet media, identify primary and secondary colors
    • for line: explore the use of line in 2-D and 3-D works
    • for texture: identify variety of textures in the environment and artwork
    • for pattern and symmetry: explore the use of patterns and symmetrical shapes in 2-D and 3-D works
    • create 2-D from direct observation
    • create 2-D and 3-D from memory or imagination in order to tell a story or embody a fantasy or idea
    • learn ways of discussing and viewing art
    • classify artwork into general categories such as painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and pottery
    • select a work or works created during the year and discuss them by explaining how the work was made and why it was chosen
Physical Education
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • practice, acquire, and refine a variety of manipulative, locomotor and non-locomotor movement skills
  • chase, fell, dodge, and catch others in activities
  • travel changing speeds and direction in response to rhythms and activities
  • perform basic balance and coordination skills in activities
  • demonstrate an ability in the fundamentals of throwing, catching, striking, kicking, and bouncing
  • promote safety through proper care of equipment and space available
Library
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
  • distinguish between fiction and non-fiction
  • understand the call number for non-fiction
  • know the location of poetry books in the library
  • identify the parts of a book: table of contents, index
  • understand the concept of publisher
  • use the call number to locate soft cover fiction
